Ronan Powell is a Full Professor of Corporate Finance at the School of Business, University College Dublin (UCD), and Director of the UCD Centre for Doctoral Research. He holds a PhD in Finance from the University of Essex. His academic career includes roles as Professor at Dublin City University (2013–2015) and Associate/Full Professor at the University of New South Wales (2001–2015), with visiting positions at renowned institutions worldwide.
His research focuses on corporate finance, mergers & acquisitions, corporate governance, innovation valuation, and capital structure. Key areas include analyzing the impact of managerial entrenchment on acquisitions, cross-border M&A strategies, and the role of government grants in innovation outcomes. He has published in top journals like the Journal of Financial Economics and serves as Editor of the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting.
Recent articles explore topics such as the limits of the managerial entrenchment hypothesis (2024), economic nationalism's impact on cross-border M&A (2022), and the efficacy of R&D grants for dominant firms (2022). His work consistently bridges theoretical models with empirical evidence, emphasizing real-world implications for firms and policymakers.
Ronan has received awards for research excellence and PhD supervision, including the Postgraduate Supervisor Award (2013) and Excellence in Research Award (2012).
