Ronan O'Reilly is a PhD candidate in History at Royal Holloway, University of London, and concurrently serves as a Visiting Lecturer in the Department of History. His research focuses on medieval military orders ( Templars/Hospitallers ), crusading history, and social memory. He also holds teaching roles at Royal Holloway and University College Dublin (UCD), instructing modules like Rome to Renaissance and Vikings in the Celtic World.

Research interests include the intersection of violence and identity in military orders, medieval heresy, and the role of historical memory in justifying conflict. His thesis examines how social memory of the military orders (c.1148–1314) enabled violent practices.
Recent publications focus on crusader narratives (e.g., Geoffrey of Villehardouin’s memoirs) and the Templars’ legal trials, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach blending historical data with sociological theory.
Awards include the Royal Holloway Doctoral Research Award (2024), Templar Heritage Fund Bursary (2023), and the Patrick Semple Medal (2016). Beyond academia, he co-founded the School of Humanities Postgraduate Seminar to foster interdisciplinary research and contributed to the Irish Historic Towns Atlas Project on New Ross.
He is affiliated with the Royal Historical Society, Society for the Study of the Crusades, and the Conflict, Violence and Terrorism Research Centre at Royal Holloway.
