Dr. Ronald van Steden is an Associate Professor in Public Administration and Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and Senior Researcher at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR). His research focuses on policing, plural security systems, citizen participation in safety governance, and the moral dimensions of security. He teaches in the Governance of Security master’s program, emphasizing collaborative approaches to security management.
His research interests span public and private policing models, community safety networks, volunteer policing, and the intersection of security with religious and ethical frameworks. Notable recent work explores existential aspects of governance, restorative justice practices, and crime victim satisfaction metrics. He actively contributes to public discourse through media engagements and policy-oriented research.
Current projects include investigating digital crime handling in police teams (‘Online blauw’) and examining societal perceptions of safety. His work aligns with UN SDGs related to public safety (SDG16) and sustainable communities (SDG11).
Van Steden has published extensively, with over 175 research outputs including peer-reviewed articles, books, and policy reports. He serves as editor for the Tijdschrift voor de Politie and frequently provides expert commentary on security-related issues in Dutch media.
