Ronald Thomas Hay is a Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Dundee, College of Life Sciences, Division of Gene Regulation and Expression, since 2005. Previously, he held academic positions at the University of St Andrews (1985–2005), including Professor of Molecular Biology (1994–2005), Reader (1991–1994), and Lecturer (1985–1991).
- B.Sc. in Biochemistry, Heriot-Watt University (1975)
- Ph.D. in Virology, University of Glasgow (1979)
His research focuses on the ubiquitin proteasome system, SUMO modification, and their roles in transcriptional regulation, DNA damage response, and quantitative proteomics. He pioneered SUMO modification as a key regulatory mechanism in eukaryotes.
Recent work highlights trends in SUMO-ubiquitin crosstalk, poly-SUMO conjugates, and stress response proteomics. His lab investigates enzymes like RNF4 and SENP7 to elucidate mechanisms of protein degradation and post-translational regulation.
- Fellow of the Royal Society
- Novartis Medal and Prize (2012)
- Over 14,000 citations; h-index 62
Hay has trained 17 PhD students and over 40 postdoctoral fellows. He receives funding from organizations including CR-UK, MRC, and Wellcome Trust for studies on SUMO-specific ubiquitin ligases and proteases. He is also an honorary member of the Scottish Institute for Cell Signaling (SCILLS).
