معرفی
Ronald Postuma, MD, M.Sc. is a Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. He serves as an Investigator at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) and is affiliated with the Brain Repair and Integrative Neuroscience (BRaIN) Program at the Montreal Neurological Institute. His clinical work is based within the Department of Neurosciences, Division of Neurology at the McGill University Health Centre.
Dr. Postuma's research primarily focuses on Parkinson's disease, with special emphasis on non-motor aspects such as sleep disorders, particularly REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). His work explores RBD as a prodromal marker for neurodegenerative conditions, including Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. He has made significant contributions to understanding the prodromal phase of synucleinopathies, developing diagnostic criteria, and investigating biomarkers for disease progression.
Analysis of Dr. Postuma's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the relationship between isolated REM sleep behavior disorder and subsequent neurodegeneration. His work spans multiple methodologies including clinical studies, neuroimaging, biomarker research, and machine learning approaches to predict phenoconversion. A significant portion of his recent work involves large multicenter collaborations examining brain atrophy patterns, network efficiency changes, and fluid biomarkers in prodromal populations. He has also been involved in clinical trials research, particularly with prasinezumab for early-stage Parkinson's disease.
Dr. Postuma has played a key role in developing consensus criteria for Parkinson's disease diagnosis and prodromal research criteria. He has contributed to major international guidelines including the MDS clinical diagnostic criteria for Parkinson's disease and research criteria for prodromal Parkinson's disease. His work has been published in leading neurology journals including Neurology, Movement Disorders, Brain, and Nature Reviews.
As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Postuma supervises numerous trainees and collaborates with researchers across North America and internationally. His work bridges clinical neurology with translational research, focusing on early detection and potential intervention points in neurodegenerative disease processes. He leads or participates in several longitudinal studies tracking individuals with REM sleep behavior disorder to understand predictors of conversion to overt neurodegenerative diseases.
