Ronald K. Hanson is the Clarence J. and Patricia R. Woodard Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University's School of Engineering. He leads the Hanson Research Group, which investigates the fundamental science underpinning energy and propulsion technologies of tomorrow. With over 1450 publications and more than 125 Ph.D. graduates, his research has made pioneering contributions to chemical kinetics, spectroscopy, gas dynamics, and energy science.
Professor Hanson's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University (1968)
- M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Arizona State University (1965)
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University (1961)
Professor Hanson's research spans multiple frontiers in energy and propulsion science. His group develops cutting-edge diagnostics and experimental techniques to address real-world challenges in clean energy, next-generation fuels, advanced energy technology, aerospace propulsion, and hypersonics. They specialize in laser sensors, shock tubes, chemical kinetics, fundamental spectroscopy, imaging and photophysics, and machine learning applications. Current research focuses include rotating detonation engines, scramjet diagnostics, high-performance jet fuels, ammonia combustion for zero-carbon energy, and emissions monitoring.
The Hanson Research Group's publications demonstrate strong trends in laser-based diagnostics for combustion and propulsion systems, with increasing focus on sustainable energy solutions, alternative fuels, and zero-carbon technologies. Their work bridges fundamental chemical kinetics with practical applications in aerospace and energy systems, with growing emphasis on machine learning approaches to fuel characterization and emissions analysis.
Professor Hanson has received numerous prestigious awards recognizing his contributions to science and engineering:
- 2023 Julius Springer Award for Applied Physics
- 2023 AIAA SciTech Outstanding Paper Award
- Inaugural Distinguished Fellow of the International Shock Wave Institute (2022)
- R. Soloukhin Medal from the Institute for Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems
- Elected to the National Academy of Engineering
- Inaugural Fellow of the Combustion Institute
- Egerton Gold Medal
- Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
- Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
- Fellow of the Optical Society of America
Professor Hanson has successfully managed over 150 research contracts and grants totaling more than $75 million throughout his career at Stanford. He has graduated over 125 Ph.D. candidates and supervised more than 20 postdoctoral scholars. Thirty-four of his students have gone on to become professors at leading institutions worldwide. His students have received numerous Best Paper Awards, including from the AIAA Ground Test Conference, AIAA Propulsion and Combustion Section, and the Combustion Institute Silver Medal.
Professor Hanson leads the Hypersonics, Propulsion, and Energy Laboratory (HyPEL) at Stanford, where his research group develops innovative diagnostic tools for studying combustion processes, shock waves, and energy systems. The group collaborates with government agencies, industry partners, and academic institutions worldwide to advance the science of propulsion and energy conversion.
