Ronald J. Pestritto serves as Dean of the Graduate School and Professor of Politics at Hillsdale College, holding the Charles and Lucia Shipley Chair in the American Constitution. His scholarly focus centers on American political thought, constitutional law, and the philosophical foundations of governance, with particular emphasis on the Progressive Era's transformative impact on American institutions.
Dr. Pestritto's academic credentials include:
- B.A. in Government from Claremont McKenna College (1990)
- M.A. in Politics from Claremont Graduate University (1992)
- Ph.D. in Political Science from Claremont Graduate University (1996)
His research interrogates the intellectual lineage connecting the American Founding to modern governance, critically analyzing how Progressive thinkers like Woodrow Wilson redefined constitutional interpretation and administrative law. Pestritto demonstrates how Progressive reforms established the modern administrative state while challenging classical liberal principles of limited government. His scholarship extends to criminal law theory, examining punishment philosophies within the social compact framework of early America.
Through eight major publications spanning two decades, Pestritto has established a cohesive analytical framework revealing Progressivism as a fundamental rupture from Founding principles rather than evolutionary development. His work consistently bridges historical political theory with contemporary constitutional debates, particularly regarding regulatory expansion and originalist interpretation.
Pestritto's scholarly contributions have been recognized through:
- Visiting Scholar at the Center for the Philosophy of Freedom (2014)
- Academic Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (2011)
- Earhart Foundation Fellowship (2009)
- Visiting Scholar at the Social Philosophy and Policy Center (2005)
- Michael A. Haggard Fellow at the University of Dallas (2005)
- Research Fellowship at the Claremont Institute (2003)
- John M. Olin Faculty Fellowship (2003)
- Presidential Award from the University of Dallas (1996)
As Dean of the Graduate School, Pestritto mentors doctoral candidates through advanced seminars in constitutional law and political philosophy while securing research support from major academic foundations. His fellowship awards from the Earhart Foundation, John M. Olin Foundation, and Claremont Institute have enabled extensive archival research on Progressive-era political thought and its enduring institutional legacy.
