Ronald J. Grele was an Associate Professor in the History Department at Columbia University and former director of its Oral History Research Center (1982–2000). He held academic roles at Lafayette College, California State University at Long Beach, and Kingsborough Community College. His career included leadership roles at the John F. Kennedy Oral History Program (Kennedy Library), Ford Foundation, New Jersey Historical Society, and UCLA's Center for Oral History Research. He served as editor-in-chief of The International Journal of Oral History (1981–1985) and authored seminal works like Envelopes of Sound (1975) and its 1991 revision, foundational texts in oral history methodology.
