Ronald Grimm is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). His research focuses on surface science and the atom-level understanding of materials for solar energy conversion, including nontraditional light-absorbing materials and nanomaterials. He leads the Grimmgroup, which investigates energy conversion and storage systems using techniques like X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). His work involves collaborations on projects such as hydrogen fuel cell solutions for aircraft and MOF functionalization.
- Education: PhD in Chemistry from California Institute of Technology (Caltech), 2005.
- Research Tools: UHV instrumentation, including a Phi5600 XPS system, TPD chamber, and glovebox transfer systems.
His lab emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to address challenges in clean energy and material interfaces. Recent grants include the President's Research Catalyst Grant (2024) for collaborative projects. Undergraduate and graduate students in his group explore topics like MOF surface functionalization and energy storage materials.
Lab facilities include customized instrumentation for air-sensitive sample analysis and partnerships with industry (e.g., Honeywell). Grimm also oversees educational outreach programs and mentors students in research methodologies.
