Ronald G. Asch is a Research Fellow in Early Modern History at the University of Freiburg, affiliated with the FRIAS School of History. He holds a doctorate from Tübingen University (1982) and completed his Habilitation at the University of Münster (1991) with a study on the Court of Charles I. His career includes professorships at the Universities of Osnabrück (1996–2003) and Freiburg since 2003. He led the junior research group Friends, patrons, followers (2006–2012) and co-founded the DFG Collaborative Research Center Helden-Heroisierungen-Heroismen in Freiburg.
His research focuses on early modern political culture, court societies, and the construction of heroism. Notable projects include studies on the Fürstenberg counts and the social networks of European nobility. He has held visiting fellowships at Frankfurt and Konstanz Universities and was a senior fellow at FRIAS (2008–2011 and 2016–2017).
Asch’s academic accolades include membership in the Heidelberg Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Academia Europaea. His work bridges interdisciplinary approaches to early modern history, emphasizing the intersection of political power, patronage, and cultural identity.
