Flores specializes in immigration studies, urban sociology, racial and ethnic groups, family sociology, Latino studies, community-based learning/engagement, and sociology of education. His research focuses on connections between race, ethnicity and communities, particularly examining New York City neighborhoods and new immigrant residents. He investigates how increased racial and ethnic diversity has produced both racially integrated and segregated neighborhoods, exploring whether the black/white racial binary is evolving into a black/nonblack binary. Additionally, he researches educational achievement patterns of Puerto Rican youth, analyzing neighborhood effects on high school attrition rates and conducting comparative analyses of Latino youth educational outcomes in the New York area.
Flores' scholarly work demonstrates consistent focus on urban sociology, immigration, and racial dynamics across multiple publications from 2007-2015. His research spans neighborhood racial stability, Latino conceptions of aging, and community-based learning methodologies, revealing his interdisciplinary approach that combines sociological theory with community engagement practices.
Ronald Flores serves on the advisory board for Connecticut College's Joy Shechtman Mankoff Center for Teaching & Learning and coordinates the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship program. He is deeply committed to active learning spaces that provide students with real-world engagement opportunities. His teaching philosophy emphasizes engaged learning pedagogy that reinforces course concepts through collaborative research and community action, which positively affects students' personal, social, and civic development. He believes strongly in active, hands-on advising and provides multiple opportunities for students to develop communication and critical learning skills through various writing and performance genres.
