Ronald E. Hanson is an Assistant Professor at York University, leading the Fluid Mechanics and Flow Control (FMFC) Research Laboratory. His work focuses on developing novel flow control technologies for aeronautical and sports industries, emphasizing environmental sustainability and performance optimization. He collaborates with academic, industrial, and government partners, including Aiolos Engineering and Kevin Quan Studios, to advance practical applications of fluid dynamics research.
Hanson's research integrates experimental and computational methods to address boundary layer flows, turbulence, and drag reduction. Key areas include:
- Wall-bounded turbulence and control methods
- Transient growth in bypass transition
- Aerodynamic drag reduction in sports (e.g., cycling)
- Microplastic transport via atmospheric turbulence
He teaches advanced courses such as ME4402 (Simulation Tools), ME4202 (Aerodynamics), and ME6105 (Advanced Fluid Dynamics) at York University. Previously, he directed the Human Powered Vehicle Team, which competed in the ASME event at Michigan State University (2019). His lab utilizes wind tunnel facilities and diagnostic tools like plasma actuators and synthetic jets to innovate in flow control systems.
Research outcomes aim to reduce energy consumption in aviation and enhance Canadian competitiveness in high-performance sports, aligning with national environmental commitments. Collaborative projects emphasize translating academic findings into industrial solutions.
