Professor Ron Grunstein is a distinguished Professor of Sleep Medicine at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Medicine and Health, where he heads the NHMRC Centre for Integrated Research and Understanding of Sleep (CIRUS) and the NHMRC Australasian Sleep Trials Network. He serves as a staff specialist physician at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and holds an honorary appointment in respiratory and sleep medicine at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney. Professor Grunstein leads the Sleep and Circadian Research Group at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research and is a member of multiple prestigious centers including the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre, the Brain and Mind Centre, and the Charles Perkins Centre.
Professor Grunstein's research spans diverse areas in sleep medicine, with primary focus on sleep neurobiology, sleep apnea, insomnia, chronobiology, and obesity-related sleep disorders. His work examines the metabolic and neurobiological effects of sleep loss, simplification of sleep apnea diagnosis, and development of new treatment interventions. He has pioneered research in nasal CPAP and non-invasive ventilatory support for sleep-breathing disorders. His current projects include high-density EEG studies on sleep disorders, weight loss interventions for sleep apnea, digital health applications for diagnosis, hypoglossal nerve stimulation, and the impact of sleep disorders on severe mental illness.
Analysis of Professor Grunstein's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on translational research bridging sleep medicine with multiple clinical disciplines. His work spans obesity management for sleep apnea (particularly with incretin-based therapies like tirzepatide), digital therapeutics for insomnia, neurophysiological assessments of sleep disorders using high-density EEG, and the relationship between sleep disorders and neurodegenerative conditions. His research increasingly integrates multi-disciplinary approaches connecting sleep medicine with psychiatry, neurology, endocrinology, and primary care implementation.

Professor Grunstein has received continuous NHMRC funding, including as an NHMRC Level 3 Investigator and former Senior Principal Research Fellow since 2002. He has served as President of the World Sleep Federation (2007-11) and the Australasian Sleep Association (1994-1997). His editorial contributions include roles as Associate Editor of Sleep and service on editorial boards of multiple sleep medicine journals. He has advised Australian, British, and EU road regulatory bodies on sleep disorders and serves as chief medical advisor to Sleep Disorders Australia.
Professor Grunstein leads the Sleep and Circadian Research Group at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, which conducts extensive work in sleep neurobiology, sleep apnea, insomnia, and chronobiology. His team collaborates internationally with institutions in Sweden (University of Gothenburg), the UK (University of Oxford, University of Surrey), and the US (UC Irvine). The group utilizes advanced methodologies including high-density EEG, neuroimaging, and digital health technologies to investigate sleep disorders and develop novel treatments.
