Ron Cheung is a Professor of Economics and Chair of the Department of Economics at Oberlin College. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of British Columbia (2006). His research focuses on public finance, urban economics, and housing policy, particularly examining the roles of homeowners' associations, property taxation, and local governance. He has been recognized with Oberlin's Distinguished Teaching Award (2017-2018) and Excellence in Teaching Award (2019).
Education: BS (First Class Honours) in Math/Economics, University of Alberta (1998); MA (Economics), University of British Columbia (1999); PhD (Economics), University of British Columbia (2006).
Research Interests:
- Local public finance and voting mechanisms
- Impact of homeowners' associations on municipal budgets and urban cohesion
- Property tax limitations and land-use regulation
- Housing market dynamics and affordability
Recent work includes analyses of localized economic shocks during the Great Recession and the effects of induced earthquakes on housing markets. He has published in top journals like the Journal of Regional Science and Regional Science and Urban Economics.
Teaching: Courses include Principles of Economics, Urban Economics, Intermediate Microeconomics, and seminars on housing markets and public economics.
Engagement: Media appearances include interviews with MoneyGeek and FinanceBuzz on housing and urban policy. He also competed on Jeopardy! in 2022 and 2024.
