Ron Balassanian

Ron Balassanian, MD, is a Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), School of Medicine, where he also serves as Program Director for Residency Training. He practices at the UCSF Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy Clinic at Mission Bay, specializing in minimally invasive diagnostic procedures for breast, thyroid, and lymph node lesions.

Dr. Balassanian earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. He completed his residency in pathology and laboratory medicine, followed by fellowship training in surgical pathology and cytopathology, all at UCSF.

His research focuses on advancing the field of cytopathology, particularly through the use of FNA biopsy and molecular diagnostics for breast cancer. He is actively involved in the I-SPY clinical trials and the Athena Breast Health Network, aiming to improve personalized cancer treatment. A key initiative he leads is "Ask Your Pathologist," which enhances communication between pathologists and patients. His global health efforts include research and teaching on FNA biopsy in Peru and Tanzania through the UCSF Global Cancer Program and the Institute for Global Health Sciences.

His recent publications reflect a strong emphasis on diagnostic accuracy, biopsy techniques (including cell blocks and ultrasound guidance), interventional pathology, and the application of FNA in diverse settings, including low- and middle-income countries. His work contributes significantly to the standardization of pathologic evaluation in breast cancer and the understanding of diagnostic discrepancies in lymphoma.
