Romuald Bodin serves as University Professor of Sociology at the Faculty of Sociology, University of Nantes, and as a core researcher at the Nantes Center for Sociology (CENS), a joint research unit (UMR_6025). His office is located in the Tertre Building (Desk T242), with contact email Romuald.Bodin@univ-nantes.fr. He teaches specialized courses in sociology of public action, institutional sociology, and research methodologies, training students in critical analysis of social structures.
Professor Bodin's research program centers on institutional power dynamics across three interconnected domains: sociology of disability (examining how institutions construct 'abnormality' and control disabled lives), higher education systems (analyzing student retention, admissions policies, and faculty working conditions), and social control mechanisms (investigating norms, regulation, and socio-educational relationships). His approach uniquely bridges micro-level interactions in social work settings with macro-level institutional transformations, particularly in French educational contexts.
Recent publications (2014-2019) reveal consistent focus on how universities function as regulatory spaces, with particular attention to student exclusion processes disguised as 'support' systems. His work on Parcoursup admissions exposes technical solutions masking structural inequalities, while disability research challenges biological determinism by demonstrating how institutions actively produce adulthood barriers. Methodologically, he combines institutional ethnography with policy analysis, yielding insights applicable to educational reform and disability rights advocacy.
As director of the 'Austere University' special issue (2014) and editor of 'The Metamorphoses of Social Control' (2012), Professor Bodin shapes national discourse on institutional change. His international collaborations—evident in Japanese and Brazilian publications—demonstrate comparative perspectives on educational inclusion. Current research likely extends his analysis of bodily regulation into post-pandemic educational contexts, building on established expertise in institutional responses to 'abnormality.'
The Nantes Center for Sociology provides the institutional home for his research, fostering interdisciplinary work on social inequalities through regular seminars and collaborative projects. Professor Bodin's leadership in edited volumes and special journal issues indicates active grant management and research coordination, supporting both junior scholars and established collaborators in sociological investigations of power and regulation.
