Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropologyمعرفی
Romm Lewkowicz is a Research Fellow in the Department of Anthropology of Politics and Governance at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, Germany. His work bridges political theory, critical legal studies, and ethnographic methodologies to examine forced migration, asylum regulation, and post-war European integration.
His research focuses on biometric documentation systems like Eurodac, analyzing how asylum seekers' bodies become sites for both technological experimentation and European self-constitution. Key geographic areas include the European Union, Greece, Turkey, and Germany, with emphasis on Syrian, Iraqi, and Yemeni migrant experiences. His approach integrates Science and Technology Studies (STS) with anthropological perspectives on law and governance.
Lewkowicz has received research funding from the Social Science Research Council, Max Planck Society, European Research Council, PublicsLab CUNY, Hauptstadtkulturfonds Berlin, and Gittell Urban Studies Collective. Prior to academia, he held operational roles in migrant rights NGOs including Hotline for Refugees and Migrants, African Refugee Development Center (Tel Aviv), Detention Action (London), and Asylos – Research for Asylum (Brussels).
