Romina Schaller

Dr. Romina Schaller is a Researcher at the Department of Environmental and Planning Law, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ in Leipzig, Germany. Her work focuses on International and European Environmental Law, with a specialization in Climate Change Mitigation, REDD+ Mechanisms, and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR). She is part of the Working Group on Land Use, Ecosystem Services, and Biodiversity.

Her research explores legal frameworks for forest conservation and ecosystem services, particularly in the context of climate action. Recent publications analyze CDR technologies, REDD+ implementation in Peru, and land-use implications of carbon removal strategies. She collaborates on projects like GONASIP, Hi-CAM, and KomUR, focusing on natural carbon sinks and future environmental law challenges.

Dr. Schaller engages with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) – Academy for Environmental Law and contributes to policy discussions on sustainable land management, bioenergy regulation, and climate-adapted legal systems. She is part of a multidisciplinary team advancing circular CO2 approaches and EU climate neutrality strategies.
