Prof. Dr. Roman E. Botcharnikov is a Professor of Petrology at the Institut für Geowissenschaften, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Previously, he held a research position at the Institute of Mineralogy, Leibniz University Hannover (2001–2017). He obtained his PhD in Geology and Mineralogy from Moscow State University (2002) and holds an M.S. equivalent from the same institution (1995). His research focuses on magmatic processes in the mantle and crust, volcanic system dynamics, experimental petrology, metallogenesis, and the properties of geological materials.
- Education:
- PhD in Geology and Mineralogy, Moscow State University, 2002
- M.S. Equivalent, Moscow State University, 1995
- Employment History:
- 2017–Present: Professor of Petrology, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
- 2001–2017: Research Position, Institute of Mineralogy, Leibniz University Hannover
- 1995–2001: Researcher, Institute of Experimental Mineralogy, Chernogolovka, Russia
His current research projects include investigating chalcophile elements in subduction zones (funded by DFG) and studying Fe-Ti oxide ore formation in high-Ti ferrobasaltic systems (collaborative Sino-German DFG project). His work bridges experimental and field-based approaches to understand magma genesis, volcanic processes, and metal behavior in magmatic systems.
Laboratory and fieldwork contributions include experimental petrology studies and geochemical analyses of geological materials. He advises on MSc and BSc thesis topics related to petrology and volcanic systems, leveraging facilities like the Electron Microprobe and XRF laboratories at Mainz.
