Dr. Romain Libbrecht is an Associate Professor and Group Leader at the University of Mainz's Department of Organismic and Molecular Evolutionary Biology. His research focuses on the genetic, genomic, and epigenetic mechanisms underlying social organization in ants, including caste differentiation, division of labor, and maternal effects on phenotypic plasticity.
- Positions: Assistant Professor (2016–present), University of Mainz
- Education: PhD (2012, University of Lausanne), MSc (2007, University of Rennes), Engineering in Agronomy (2007, Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Agronomie de Rennes)
Research interests include DNA methylation's role in social insects, maternal effects on caste determination, and the evolutionary origins of social behavior. He has received Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships (2013–2016) and leads research on ant social genomics and behavior.
Publications span topics like histone acetylation's role in circadian rhythms and social isolation's impact on immune function. His group collaborates widely, with studies in Cerapachys biroi ants and Pogonomyrmex harvester ants. Current work explores how epigenetic mechanisms regulate social complexity and aging in insect societies.
- Awards: Marie Curie Fellowships (Return & Outgoing Phases)
- Labs: Part of the Mainz research group studying evolutionary biology and social insect systems
