Romain Dittgen is an Associate Professor in Human Geography and Spatial Planning at Utrecht University's Faculty of Geosciences, and concurrently serves as Cluster Chair for Cluster 3 at University College Utrecht (UCU). His primary research focuses on urban transformation, migration dynamics, and China-Africa urban engagements, with fieldwork concentrated in South Africa, Zambia, and Western Europe. He leads the Social Urban Transitions research group and is affiliated with the University of Pretoria's Centre for Asian Studies in Africa and Leiden University's International Institute for Asian Studies.
Key research interests include pragmatic cohabitation in diverse urban contexts, material shifts in urban spaces, and the interplay between migration and city-making. He edits Global China Pulse and contributes to The People's Map of Global China. Geographically, his work spans South Africa, Zambia, China, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.
Recent publications analyze large-scale urban projects in Johannesburg, community mobilization strategies, and the spatial impacts of Chinese engagements in African cities. His work bridges urban theory with empirical studies of global-local interactions in rapidly changing cities.
