Rolf Lewensohn is a Professor of Oncology at Karolinska Institutet and a Senior Consultant at the Karolinska University Hospital's Oncology Clinic. He leads a research group of ~20 members within the Department of Oncology-Pathology, focusing on precision cancer medicine and radiation therapy. His roles include Programme Director of the Swedish Radiation Emergency Medicine Centre (KcRN), Scientific Board member of Swedish funding bodies, and chair of the Nordic SBRT study group.
His research integrates preclinical and clinical studies to develop novel therapies for lung cancer and other malignancies, emphasizing precision radiotherapy and targeted drug candidates. Key areas include DNA repair mechanisms, apoptosis signaling, and biomarker-driven treatment selection. He pioneered stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for lung cancer and leads clinical trials combining SBRT with immunotherapy/targeted drugs.
Recent publications highlight SBRT efficacy in early-stage lung cancer, real-world outcomes of ALK-positive NSCLC treatments, and liquid biopsy applications using extracellular vesicles. His work bridges molecular biology (e.g., genomic/proteomic analysis) with clinical translation, including the EurocanPlatform initiative to unify European cancer research efforts.
Grants include Swedish Cancer Society funding for SBRT and immunotherapy research, and Swedish Research Council support for machine learning in oncology. Collaborations span academic and pharmaceutical partners to advance personalized cancer care.
