Roland Iwan Luttens is an Associate Professor of Economics and Dean of the John Stuart Mill College at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He also serves as Program Director of the Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) BSc program. Previously, he worked as a lecturer at Amsterdam University College and as a post-doctoral researcher at the Fund for Scientific Research – Flanders (FWO). He holds a PhD from Ghent University.
His research focuses on normative economic theory, including individual and strategic choice theory, social/public choice mechanisms, institutional economics, and the history of economic thought. Key themes include integrating liberal-egalitarian justice principles into redistribution mechanisms, adjudicating bankruptcy claims, comparing welfare in Hobbesian vs. market economies, analyzing incomplete preferences and rationality, and game-theoretic foundations of social contracts.
Recent publications explore topics such as fairness in bankruptcy scenarios, Pareto efficiency in resource-scarce environments, and collective wage bargaining dynamics. He co-leads an active 6-year research project on rationality choice and fairness (2024–2029), funded by Stimuleringsbeurs. Additionally, he serves on the editorial board of Theory and Decision journal since 2025.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Economic Challenges, Foundations of Microeconomics, and Governance for Society within the PPE program. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to reducing inequalities and promoting just institutions.
