Roland H. Friedel, PhD, is a Professor of Neuroscience and Neurosurgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, leading the Friedel Laboratory focused on molecular mechanisms of brain tumorigenesis in glioblastoma.
Research centers on axon guidance molecules (notably Plexin-B2) regulating glioma cell migration/proliferation and molecular characterization of brain tumor stem cells using H2B-GFP reporters. The lab aims to identify novel therapeutic targets for therapy-resistant brain tumors through in vitro and orthotopic transplant models.
Recent work demonstrates Plexin-B2's role in membrane tension regulation during confined-space glioma invasion, revealing connections between endocytic vesicle dynamics, actin assembly, and phospholipid composition in polarized cell migration.
The laboratory (ICAHN 10-20F) includes postdoctoral fellows, instructors, and volunteers employing live-cell imaging and molecular techniques to study tumor cell biophysics and stemness.
