Prof. Dr. Roland Altenburger is a Full Professor of Sinology at the University of Würzburg's Philosophische Fakultät, leading the Chair of East Asian Cultural History and Chair of Contemporary Chinese Studies. His research focuses on pre-modern and modern Chinese narrative literature, sociolinguistic analysis, and the history of Sinology. He has authored/co-edited influential works on topics like female knight-errant narratives, address behavior in 18th-century novels, and Yangzhou’s literary legacy.
Key research areas include Ming-Qing fiction, cultural geography, and textual criticism. His work spans interdisciplinary studies such as Raum und Grenze in den Chinastudien (2016) and Yangzhou – A Place in Literature (2015), exploring regional identity and spatial representation. He has contributed to conferences globally, discussing themes like 'The City in Late Imperial Chinese Narrative Literature' and 'Intertextuality in Dunhuang Manuscripts.'
