Tian Yuan Tan is the Shaw Professor of Chinese and Professorial Fellow at University College, University of Oxford. She specializes in pre-modern Chinese literature, textual studies, and imperial court culture. Her work bridges literary analysis with digital humanities, focusing on Ming-Qing drama, anthologies, and cross-cultural literary interactions. Current projects include the ERC-funded TEXTCOURT initiative exploring Chinese court theater and collaborative research on Tang Xianzu’s global legacy. She has authored seminal works like Songs of Contentment and Transgression and edited critical editions of Kang Hai’s sanqu. Tan’s research emphasizes textual editing practices, authorship questions, and the role of performance in literary history.
Her academic contributions span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles across journals like Journal of Chinese Ritual, Theatre and Folklore and Nanyang Journal of Chinese Literature and Culture. She co-directs major grants including CCFK-funded projects on Ming anthologies and serves on editorial boards for leading Chinese studies journals. Professional leadership includes roles as Secretary-General of the European Association for Chinese Studies (2012–2018).
Tan’s teaching includes graduate courses on pre-modern Chinese literary worlds and research methodologies. Her current doctoral advisees investigate diverse topics in Chinese literary history.
