Dr. Rogier van Kooten is a Policy Adviser and Research Coordinator at the Humanities Faculty's Economic and Social History department at Utrecht University, while also serving as Educational Programme Director of the N.W. Posthumus Institute since 1 September 2021. He works at the Research Institute for History and Art History within the Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) research theme, applying ArcGIS and network analysis to historical studies.
- As former copromotor at the University of Antwerp's Centre for Urban History, he contributed to the "Mapping the Market" project analyzing Antwerp's 19th-century credit networks
- Previously a PhD student on the GIStorical Antwerp project (2016-2021) at the University of Antwerp
His research interests combine spatial analysis with economic and social history, focusing on:
- Urban History (demographic decline, credit markets)
- Disaster Studies (plague outbreaks, flood management)
- Network Analysis (elite formation, commercial circuits)
- Socioeconomic inequality in historical contexts
- Historical GIS applications
Recent publications include analyses of:
- Antwerp's notarial credit markets (2024)
- 1871 voter data reflecting tax-based eligibility
- 16th-century urban crises in Antwerp
Scientific recognition includes:
