Roger Strand is a Professor affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Bergen. He is a core member of the Research Group Theory of Science, focusing on scientific theory’s role in natural sciences, biomedicine, and environmental sciences. His work bridges complexity science, ethical analysis, and societal governance of emerging technologies.
Key projects include leadership roles in EU initiatives such as MAGIC (2016-2024), addressing adaptive governance in complex systems; HEIRRI (2015-2018), promoting Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI); and CCBIO (2013-2018), an ELSA (Ethical, Legal, and Social Aspects) program in cancer biology. He has also led national projects like REFLEXIVE SYSTEMS BIOLOGY (2010-2013) and NORCAT (2003-2006), exploring complexity in environmental governance.
His research interests emphasize the interplay between science, ethics, and policy. Notable themes include RRI frameworks, governance of the water-energy-food nexus, and societal implications of precision medicine, nanotechnology, and biobanking. He critiques Cartesian dualism in science-policy interactions and advocates for reflexive, participatory governance models.
Strand collaborates internationally, including with the European Commission on RRI indicators and the Council of Europe on bioethics. His work often involves translating complex scientific issues into actionable policy frameworks through interdisciplinary dialogue and stakeholder engagement.
