Roger Seiler, Dr. med. dent. Dr. phil., is a Research Affiliate in the Paleopathology and Mummy Studies Group at the University of Zurich. His work focuses on dento-alveolar structures in experimental mummification, ancient dental pathologies, and micro-CT imaging of human remains. Current projects include studying Neolithic dentitions (e.g., Ötzi, the Iceman) and Swiss Mummy Project analyses of dento-alveolar and skull pathologies like biparietal thinning and multiple myeloma. Past projects involved medico-historical research on plague and medieval art.
Key research interests span ancient Egyptian and medieval European populations, with emphasis on oral health disparities, skeletal degeneration, and cultural mortuary practices. Over 50 peer-reviewed publications demonstrate expertise in paleopathology, mummification techniques, and interdisciplinary archaeological methods. Notable studies include analyses of KV64 Egyptian mummies, Japanese Heian-period mummies, and salt mummies from Iran.
His work combines bioarchaeological analysis with advanced imaging technologies, bridging gaps between anthropology, medicine, and history. Collaborations with institutions like the Geneva Museum and Palermo Catacombs highlight his global contributions to understanding ancient disease patterns and cultural practices.
