Roger S. Levine is Associate Professor of History at Sewanee: The University of the South, with joint appointments in Environmental Studies and International and Global Studies programs. A cultural historian specializing in modern South Africa, his research examines colonial encounters through indigenous perspectives.
His acclaimed 2010 monograph A Living Man from Africa reconstructs the life of Xhosa leader Jan Tzatzoe using innovative narrative methodologies, revealing African perspectives on 19th-century colonialism. Current research investigates historical representations of racism in South African popular culture and children's literature.
Teaching encompasses courses on African history, environmental history, slavery studies, colonial warfare, religious history, and historiography. No awards or supervised students are documented in available materials.
