Professor Roger Markwick is an Honorary Professor in the School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences at the University of Newcastle. Specializing in modern European history with a focus on Russian and Soviet history, he has held academic roles since 2001 and served as Head of School from 2011–15. A fluent Russian speaker, he has collaborated extensively with international scholars.
Research Expertise spans Soviet women's roles in WWII, Stalinism, historiography, fascism, Holocaust studies, and comparative totalitarianism. His work often intersects with gender and violence in wartime contexts.
Recent Publications include co-edited volumes on Soviet home front experiences and analyses of Stalinist state-building. A
