Roger Hamilton is a Teaching Professor in Historical Performance at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). He holds a multidisciplinary background, having studied Music at Clare College Cambridge, Royal Academy of Music, National Opera Studio, and later Philosophy and Psychology at Oxford Brookes University. Recognized as the Arts Council of Great Britain Young Conductor of the Year in 1992, his career spans conducting, harpsichord performance, musicology, and teaching.
He has conducted renowned ensembles such as the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and collaborated with institutions like Théâtre de la Monnaie Brussels and Glyndebourne Touring Opera. His opera productions, including Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice, have garnered international acclaim.
Hamilton is also Music Director of The Band of Instruments in Oxford and has taught at institutions including the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. His research interests focus on historical performance practices, Baroque opera, and early music interpretation.
Notable achievements include the 2015 Best Opera of the Year award in the Netherlands and leadership roles in projects such as El Sistema in Venezuela. His work bridges academic teaching and professional performance, emphasizing the revival of historically informed practices.
