Dr. Roger G. Melko is a Professor at the University of Waterloo and Canada Research Chair in Computational Quantum Many-Body Physics. He is also an Associate Faculty member at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and holds affiliations with the Perimeter Institute Quantum Intelligence Lab, Vector Institute, and Creative Destruction Labs. His research focuses on computational methods for quantum many-body systems, including entanglement in condensed matter, quantum phase transitions, and machine learning applications in physics. Melko earned his PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara, followed by postdoctoral work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He has received prestigious awards such as the Herzberg Medal (2016) and the IUPAP Young Scientist Prize (2012).
Research Interests: Melko’s work spans strongly correlated quantum systems, novel numerical techniques (e.g., quantum Monte Carlo), and the intersection of machine learning with quantum physics. He explores phenomena like spin liquids, unconventional criticality, and superfluid/solid phases. His group develops algorithms and open-source software (e.g., PIQuIL) to simulate quantum matter and devices.
Teaching: Melko has taught advanced courses such as PHYS 449 (Machine Learning in Physics), PHYS 705 (Statistical Physics II), and PHYS 739 (Quantum Many-Body Physics). His educational background includes degrees from the University of Waterloo (BSc, MSc) and University of California, Santa Barbara (MA, PhD).
