Roger Benedict is an Associate Professor and Chief Conductor of the SCM Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. He is also the Artistic Director of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Fellowship Program and heads the viola department. His career spans conducting, solo performances, and pedagogy. He has held teaching roles at the Royal Northern College of Music (UK) and frequently leads masterclasses globally.
His research interests include orchestral training, viola performance, and innovative programming. Notable works include recordings such as Volupté (2010) and A Winter’s Tale (2018), which explore rare compositions and classical repertoire. He is also active in music outreach, founding Orchestra for Life to support mental health charities through concerts.
Roger’s publications span journals like the Journal of the American Viola Society and Research Studies in Music Education, alongside editions of viola transcriptions and educational methods. His recent focus includes compositions and arrangements, such as Scale Up! (2019), a viola scales method.
