Rodney C. Austin is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Geneva College, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. He teaches a range of courses including General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry, and has developed innovative interdisciplinary curricula focused on global water issues.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Cincinnati (2000) and a B.S. from Mount Vernon Nazarene College (1992).
Dr. Austin's research spans environmental chemistry, biochemistry, and chemical education. He actively involves students in projects such as water quality analysis, phytochrome protein characterization, and pharmaceutical testing. His work emphasizes hands-on, inquiry-based learning through frameworks like POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning).
The recent publications reflect a strong trend in interdisciplinary and student-centered research, combining analytical chemistry with environmental monitoring and pedagogical innovation. Topics include glyphosate impact on bacteria, metal contamination in river sediments, and methods for teaching global water issues.
Dr. Austin is active in professional societies including the Protein Society and the Society of Analytical Chemistry of Pittsburgh. He also holds a leadership role in the POGIL movement as chair of the Video Workshop Group and has presented at national conferences such as the Biennial Conference on Chemical Education and the American Chemical Society meetings.
He mentors numerous undergraduate students, supervising research on water quality, environmental contaminants, and biochemical methods. His collaborations include the Beaver Falls Municipal Authority and Notre Dame on analytical projects. He has led initiatives integrating biology, chemistry, and mathematics in education and continues to develop pedagogical tools for active learning.
Dr. Austin's current research includes isolating and characterizing a unique phytochrome from Pedobacter heparinus, analyzing TTHMs in drinking water, and examining industrial metal levels in local river sediments. He works closely with students in field and laboratory settings, promoting experiential learning and community engagement.
