Rochelle Gutiérrez is a Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, Latina/Latino Studies, and affiliated with the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois. Her work focuses on rehumanizing mathematics education through intersectional and political lenses, emphasizing race, class, and language. She challenges deficit views of marginalized students and advocates for teachers to develop 'political conocimiento.'
Research Interests: Identity and power dynamics in mathematics education, Indigenous principles in pedagogy, living mathematx, and creative insubordination in teaching. She designs courses on social justice and mathematics methods for pre-service teachers, as well as graduate seminars on sociopolitical perspectives in education.
Her recent work explores tensions in teaching, the role of uncertainty in pedagogy, and ethical teacher identities. She collaborates across disciplines to address high-stakes educational systems and AI ethics in academia.
