Dr. Robyne E. Calvert is a Researcher in the History of Architecture and Design at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, The Glasgow School of Art. Her work focuses on Victorian and Edwardian art, architecture, and fashion, particularly the intersections of artistic dress, Symbolist aesthetics, and the legacy of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
- Education: PhD thesis Fashioning the Artist: Artistic Dress in Victorian Britain 1848-1900 (University of Glasgow, 2012)
Her research explores the cultural and symbolic roles of dress in Victorian artistic communities, the materiality of Glasgow Style design, and the conservation challenges following the 2014 Mackintosh Building fire. She has co-organized conferences like Crafting the Look: Styling as Creative Process (2014) and delivered keynote addresses on Mackintosh’s architectural legacy.
Calvert’s publications include analyses of Art Nouveau, Pre-Raphaelite dress, and the symbolic use of space in Victorian institutions. Her work often bridges art history, design studies, and conservation practice, emphasizing the tactile and functional aspects of historical objects.
She actively engages with public scholarship, including The American Duchess Podcast (2020), where she discusses Glasgow Style and Artistic Dress with Lauren Stowell and Abby Cox.
