Robyn Woollands is an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she has been a faculty member since 2021. Prior to joining UIUC, she served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University (2017-2020) and completed a postdoctoral position there in 2017. She maintains an affiliation with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a JPL Affiliate since 2021.
Dr. Woollands earned her educational degrees from prestigious institutions: a BS in Physics (2006), MS in Astronomy (2008), and Graduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies (2008) from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand; an MS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Minnesota (2010); and a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M University (2016).
Her research spans multiple critical areas in aerospace engineering, with a strong focus on astrodynamics and space mission design. She has made significant contributions to numerical methods for orbital propagation, particularly through her work on Picard-Chebyshev methods, which provide efficient solutions for high-fidelity perturbed two-body dynamics. Her research also encompasses optimization techniques for space missions, low-thrust trajectory design, Mars exploration strategies, satellite servicing operations, and space domain awareness. Dr. Woollands' work bridges theoretical developments with practical applications, addressing challenges in spacecraft navigation, mission planning, and orbital mechanics.
Analysis of her publication record reveals a strong trajectory of increasing impact and complexity in her research. Her early work focused on foundational numerical methods for orbital propagation, while more recent publications demonstrate expansion into diverse applications including Mars exploration, satellite servicing, lunar missions, and Earth observation. A consistent theme throughout her work is the development and application of efficient computational methods to solve complex astrodynamics problems, with particular emphasis on optimization and high-fidelity modeling.
Dr. Woollands has received significant recognition for her research contributions, including the prestigious Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Career Award in 2024. She was also honored with the Distinguished Graduate Student Doctoral Award from Texas A&M University in 2017 and received student paper awards from major aerospace conferences in 2014 and 2015. These awards reflect both the quality of her research and her potential as an emerging leader in the field of astrodynamics.
At UIUC, Dr. Woollands teaches advanced courses in orbital mechanics (AE 402 and AE 502), spacecraft attitude control (AE 403), and optimal space trajectories (AE 508). Her teaching reflects her research expertise and provides students with both theoretical foundations and practical applications in spacecraft dynamics and control. She leads the Woollands Research Group, which focuses on advancing computational methods for space mission design and analysis.
