Professor Robin de Graaf is a distinguished faculty member in the Department of Radiology & Biomedical Imaging at Yale School of Medicine. His research focuses on cerebral energy metabolism and its relationship to functional activation in human and animal brains using advanced NMR spectroscopy techniques.
Dr. de Graaf earned his PhD from Utrecht University in 1998, following his doctoral studies there beginning in 1994. His academic journey has established him as a leading expert in magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging techniques for metabolic studies.
His primary research interests encompass cerebral energy metabolism, NMR spectroscopy (proton, carbon-13, oxygen-17 and phosphorus-31), and Deuterium Metabolic Imaging (DMI). He specializes in developing methods to achieve magnetic field uniformity throughout the brain, tackling magnetic field inhomogeneity through dynamic shimming and novel electrical coil element arrays. His laboratory has pioneered 13C NMR methods at the Yale MRRC, extending these techniques to achieve 3D coverage, higher sensitivity through 1H detection, and higher specificity for applications like GABA turnover detection.
Dr. de Graaf's recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on Deuterium Metabolic Imaging applications in brain tumors, cardiac imaging, and metabolic mapping. His work frequently involves collaborations with researchers like Henk De Feyter, Douglas Rothman, and Graeme Mason.
