Her educational background includes:
- BA from Antioch College
- Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Baruch College’s Marxe School of Public and International Affairs
McGinty's research centers on formerly incarcerated African-American women's knowledge production through oral histories, interrogating racialized and gendered spatial formations within the black radical tradition and black feminist thought. Her project "Carceral Knowledges: A Labor of Livingness" utilizes Cedric Robinson's 'usable past' framework and Saidya Hartman's concept of 'making possibility out of disposability' to analyze resistance narratives and self-determination in carceral contexts.
Her scholarly output, including the 2022 publication "The Children of the People", demonstrates consistent engagement with race, social justice, and critical pedagogy through student-centered narratives and community-based research methodologies.
McGinty's recognition includes:
- Columbia University Center for Oral History Research Summer Institute Fellow (2017)
- CUNY Graduate Center Dr. Louise Lennihan Arts and Sciences Grant (2016)
- Columbia University Center for Justice Justice Research Fellow (2015)
- Columbia Law School Public Science Project Critical PAR Institute (2014)
Her community engagement spans theater for social change initiatives like "Theater for Social Change: (In)Visible Freedom" and "There is a Portal: Kayhan Irani", reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to amplifying marginalized voices through performance and oral history.
