Robin Matthews is a Professor in the College of the Environment at Western Washington University and the former Director of the Institute for Watershed Studies. She holds a PhD in Botany/Aquatic Ecology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, an MS in Environmental Studies from Indiana University, and a BS in Biology from the University of California, Riverside.
- PhD in Botany/Aquatic Ecology – Virginia Tech
- MS in Environmental Studies – Indiana University
- BS in Biology – University of California, Riverside
Her major research interests include aquatic ecology, pattern analysis of large ecological datasets, and limnological modeling. She has conducted extensive research on Lake Whatcom, focusing on nutrient dynamics, trophic state classification, and seasonal nitrogen limitation. Her work bridges field ecology, data science, and environmental policy.
The selected publications reflect a strong focus on freshwater systems, nutrient cycling, algal taxonomy, and ecological modeling. Her research spans from microbial processes to whole-ecosystem dynamics, with consistent emphasis on data analysis and environmental monitoring. She has contributed significantly to textbooks and technical reports, including a major edition of Environmental Engineering.
Dr. Matthews has received external funding as the principal investigator for the Lake Whatcom monitoring program, supported by the City of Bellingham. Her work integrates long-term ecological data with community-level toxicity assessments and environmental risk modeling. She has advised numerous students, many of whom co-authored her publications, particularly in mesocosm studies, nutrient retention, and invertebrate ecology.
She is affiliated with the Institute for Watershed Studies at Western Washington University, which supports interdisciplinary research on watershed science, policy, and management. The institute conducts monitoring, data analysis, and outreach for regional water bodies, especially Lake Whatcom.
