Roberto Vivarelli (1932–2014) was an Italian historian specializing in modern European history, particularly Italian, French, and British contexts. He served as Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Siena (1972–1975) and later as Professor at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (1986 onwards), becoming Professor Emeritus. A member of the Academy of Europe since 1993, his work focused on the political and social dynamics of 19th- and 20th-century Europe.
His seminal three-volume work Storia delle origini del fascismo (1965–2012) is a definitive study of Fascism's emergence in Italy, analyzing the period 1918–1922 through exhaustive archival research. This monumental work remains the most comprehensive historiographical analysis of Fascism's origins.
Though no specific awards are listed, his election to the Academy of Europe underscores his scholarly impact. Vivarelli's career was dedicated to understanding the complex interplay of political forces in modern Italy and Europe. Sadly, he passed away in 2014.
