Roberto Tinterri is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical, Life and Environmental Sustainability Sciences at the University of Parma, Italy. He has been teaching Sedimentology and Applied Sedimentology courses since 2005 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2015. His academic career includes extensive research collaborations with major oil companies including ENI, Petrobras, Chevron, and ExxonMobil.
Dr. Tinterri earned his degree in Geological Sciences from the University of Parma with honors (110/110 cum laude), completing his Doctor of Research in Sedimentology at the University of Bologna in 2000. His doctoral research focused on sedimentology and physical stratigraphy of estuary bar and platform lobe deposits in the Eocene succession of the Tremp-Graus basin.
Professor Tinterri's research focuses on sedimentary geology, with special emphasis on physical stratigraphy and sedimentology of terrigenous depositional systems. His work examines facies and physical processes in fluvio-deltaic, tidal, and turbidite deposits. He has conducted extensive field research in multiple geological basins including the Tertiary Piedmont Basin (Italy), Paradox Basin (Utah, USA), Tremp-Graus and Hecho Basins (Spain), Epiligurian Basins (Northern Apennines), Marnoso-arenacea Formation, Umbro-Marchigian carbonate succession, Annot Sandstone (France), and offshore Brazilian basins. His current research examines fluvio-deltaic sedimentation dominated by hyperpycnal flows and turbidite sedimentation with emphasis on facies analysis and tectono-sedimentary relationships.
His publications reveal a consistent focus on turbidite systems in tectonically confined settings, particularly analyzing facies architecture, flow dynamics, and basin evolution. A significant portion of his work centers on the Marnoso-arenacea Formation in the Northern Apennines, with comparative studies of analogous systems in France and Spain. His research methodology integrates detailed field observations with 3D modeling techniques and experimental data.

Professor Tinterri has supervised 8 PhD theses, 3 research grants, 2 scholarships, and 26 undergraduate/master's theses (16 Bachelor's, 9 Master's, and 1 co-supervised Master's thesis). His research has been funded through multiple projects with ENI (2000-2003, 2011-2014, 2013-2016), Petrobras (2012-2015, 2013-2017), and Medoil Gas (2010-2011), focusing on numerical modeling of turbidite systems and physical stratigraphy. He regularly leads field excursions in the Pyrenees, Italy, and France for major oil companies to update technical staff on stratigraphy and sedimentology topics. Professor Tinterri serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Mediterranean Earth Sciences and is a member of the International Association of Sedimentology (IAS).
