Roberto Patuelli is an Associate Professor of Economic Policy at the Department of Economics, University of Bologna. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and has extensive experience in academic roles across Europe, including post-doctoral research and teaching at institutions in Switzerland, Germany, and Italy. His research focuses on regional economics, spatial statistics, econometrics, and transportation policy, with a particular emphasis on complex networks and regional innovation processes.
Education: Bachelor in Statistics and Economics (University of Bologna), M.A. in Transportation Policy (George Mason University), and Ph.D. in Economics (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). Past roles include visiting researcher positions at ETH Zurich and the ZEW Centre in Mannheim, as well as editorial roles for journals like REGION and Tourism Economics. He has coordinated major research projects, including the JPI-Urban Europe 'SmartHubs' initiative.
Research interests span spatial econometrics, neural network forecasting, commuting networks, and the economic impact of tourism. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and edited volumes, including works on spatial filtering and gravity models. Awards include the Italian National Scientific Qualification for full professorial roles in economic policy and applied economics.
Grants and collaborations include leadership in projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the European Commission, and the Italian Ministry of Research. He advises on tourism and regional policy, with a focus on spatial interaction models and policy evaluation. His teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses in regional economics, tourism economics, and spatial statistics.
