Roberto Mata is an Assistant Professor in the Religious Studies Department at Santa Clara University, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. His academic work focuses on Contextual Biblical Studies, particularly migration themes in biblical literature.

Dr. Mata's research intersects migration/immigration with colonialism, race/ethnicity, Jewish diaspora, decoloniality, and border pedagogy. His current book project (under contract with Lexington Fortress Press) reinterprets Revelation's Exodus motifs as decolonial migration narratives.
His publications span peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and handbook entries focusing on Revelation's apocalyptic themes, migrant agency in biblical texts, and decolonial biblical criticism. Notably, he has contributed to The Oxford Handbook of the Bible and Migrations (2023) and The Bible and Migration (2018).
