Roberto Borgogno

Roberto Borgogno is Associate Professor of Criminal Law (SSD IUS/17) at the Sapienza University of Rome, Department of Legal, Economic and Philosophical Studies. He teaches Criminal Law II, European Criminal Law, European Criminal Procedural Law, Fundamental Criminal Law and International Criminal Law across the Laurea Magistrale in Law, the European Studies degree and the Cognitive Forensic Sciences programme.

Education

• 14 July 1989 – Laurea in Giurisprudenza (110/110 cum laude), Sapienza University of Rome. Thesis: “Profili penali dell’illecito sportivo” (supervisor Prof. F. Coppi).
• October 1992 – admitted to the PhD programme in Criminal Law and Procedure (VII cycle), Sapienza University of Rome.
• October 1996 – PhD in Criminal Law and Procedure, thesis: “La tutela penale del segreto professionale”.

Research Interests
Professor Borgogno’s research spans the special part of Italian criminal law—offences against property, against public administration, against the administration of justice, environmental crimes and sexual offences—together with European criminal law and procedure, corporate criminal liability, confiscation regimes, and the challenges posed by digitisation and highly automated processes.

Recent Publications
His recent scholarship (2020-2024) examines embezzlement by public officials, criteria for dissolving accumulated sentences, scientific evidence and causation, legislative reforms introduced by D.Lgs. 21/2018, corporate liability for workplace safety crimes, and the criminal protection of numismatic assets.

Teaching & Thesis Supervision
Professor Borgogno coordinates the Criminal Law II curriculum (channels A-F) and manages a structured thesis-assignment schedule to cope with high student demand. He also organises intensive tutoring cycles and seminars on selected offences using case-law analysis.

Laboratories & Teams
While no formal laboratory is mentioned, he collaborates with colleagues Prof. Elvira Dinacci, Prof. Paolo Coco, and Prof. Paolo Bartolo across the three channels of Criminal Law II, and supervises joint tutoring initiatives delivered via Google Meet/Zoom.
