Roberta Bartoli is an Associate Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Art History in Florence. She holds a PhD from the University of Pisa, following her laurea (master's) under Mina Gregori at the University of Florence. Her career includes a Senior Mellon Fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2003) and appointments as Visiting Professor of Art History at the University of Minnesota (2010–2015) and as a Fellow Curator at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. She has taught at the Scuola di Alta Formazione dell’Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence (2016) and currently contributes to the Master in Cultural Diplomacy at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore as a faculty member and Advisory Board member since 2018.
Her research focuses on Renaissance painted and pastiglia chests, aiming to compile an updated corpus of these artifacts. This project revises historical scholarship, incorporating newly discovered production centers and reassembling dispersed collections. Her work emphasizes Tuscany’s workshop networks, patronage, and material culture. She has also contributed to studies on domestic painting and transcultural art histories.
Bartoli’s awards include recognition from the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno and the Mellon Foundation. Her academic engagement extends to collaborations with international institutions, promoting interdisciplinary dialogue on art history and cultural heritage preservation.
