Robert S. Westman is a Professor of History at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), specializing in the History of Science with a focus on the Scientific Revolution and early modern astronomy. He previously taught at UCLA before joining UCSD’s faculty in 1988. His research interrogates the socio-cultural, religious, and philosophical conditions shaping scientific thought, particularly the Copernican Revolution and resistance to it. He has held leadership roles, including Director of UCSD’s Science Studies Program (2008–2013) and a Huntington Dibner Fellowship (2011–12).
Westman’s academic journey includes a B.A. from the University of Michigan (1963), followed by studies at Imperial College, London (1967–69), and a Ph.D. in History of Science from the University of Michigan (1971). His work challenges internalist historiography by integrating sociological, philosophical, and cultural perspectives.
Central to his research is the question of why Copernicus abandoned geocentrism and how subsequent generations engaged with his heliocentric theory. He argues that Copernicus’s work arose from late 15th-century debates over astrology’s credibility, linking celestial order to political and religious stability. His major work, *The Copernican Question* (2011), synthesizes these themes, earning scholarly acclaim and prompting interdisciplinary dialogue.
Westman’s awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship and recognition for his contributions to science studies. His courses cover the Scientific Revolution, Galileo’s legacy, and the historical interplay between science and religion. His publications span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles addressing topics from Kepler’s theology to historiographical methodological debates.
