Dr. Robert Way is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Planning at Queen’s University, where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Northern Environmental Change and leads the Northern Environmental Geoscience Laboratory. As an Indigenous Kallunângajuk scholar from Nunatsiavut, his research combines field studies, environmental modelling, and remote sensing to analyze climate change impacts on Arctic and Subarctic regions, with a focus on permafrost dynamics in Labrador.
Education:
- Honours Bachelor of Arts in Geography, University of Ottawa (2010)
- Master of Science in Geography, Memorial University of Newfoundland (2013)
- Doctorate in Geography, University of Ottawa (2017)
Research: Dr. Way's work examines cryospheric changes through climate station networks and vulnerability assessments, addressing themes like permafrost degradation, snow-ecosystem interactions, and northern biodiversity. His interdisciplinary approach bridges geospatial analysis and community-focused climate adaptation.
Publications: Recent articles demonstrate consistent focus on permafrost vulnerability, Arctic ecosystem shifts, and innovative monitoring techniques using UAVs and geospatial databases, with fieldwork centered on Labrador's coastal environments.
Awards:
- Canada Research Chair in Northern Environmental Change
Community Engagement: Operates participatory research networks in Nunatsiavut communities and maintains active science communication through laboratory YouTube and Bluesky channels.
