Robert W Matson is a Professor of History at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He holds a PhD from the University of Oregon (1981), with prior graduate studies at the University of Portland and degrees from San Diego State University and California State University, Fresno. His academic affiliations include the Social Science Division and the History program.
Research interests focus on European history (Renaissance/Reformation, modern Britain, 20th-century Europe), religious studies (world religions, Judaism/Christianity/Islam, origins of Christianity), and Latin American history (Mexico's church wealth). He also explores film's role in historical representation, Finnish Cold War dynamics, and pre-Columbian Maya civilization.
Publications include books like Neutrality and Navicerts (1994) and William Mulholland (1976), edited volumes on visual evidence and WWII film portrayals, and numerous articles analyzing topics ranging from Cuban travelers to Finnish foreign policy. His work bridges historical analysis with interdisciplinary approaches in film, archaeology, and political theory.
